In California, smog inspections are essential for keeping our air clean and ensuring vehicles meet emissions standards. If you’re wondering whether your car needs a smog check, the answer depends on several factors including the vehicle’s age, fuel type, and whether you’re buying or selling a car. Here at EZ Smog Check, we offer quick and reliable smog tests to keep your car compliant with state regulations.

Smog Check Requirements in California Most vehicles in California require a smog check every two years, as well as during initial registration. The program applies to cars, trucks, and other passenger vehicles manufactured from 1976 onward, powered by:

  • Gasoline
  • Diesel (1998 models and newer, under 14,500 lbs)
  • Propane
  • Natural gas
  • Methanol/Ethanol fuels
  • Hybrid electric vehicles

However, there are some exceptions for specific vehicle types and model years.

Exemptions from Smog Checks If your vehicle falls into one of the following categories, you may be exempt from smog testing in California:

  • Gasoline-powered cars from 1975 or older
  • Diesel vehicles from 1997 or older, or those with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 14,500 lbs
  • Electric and natural gas-powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs
  • Motorcycles and trailers

Additionally, if your vehicle is less than four years old and being transferred between owners, it may also be exempt from smog testing during a sale.

Out-of-State Vehicles If you’re moving to California or purchasing a vehicle from out-of-state, smog checks are required before you can register the car here. Both diesel and gasoline vehicles must undergo testing before receiving California plates.

Diesel Smog Checks Unlike gasoline-powered vehicles, diesel vehicles undergo a slightly different smog check process. The test focuses on a visual inspection of your vehicle’s smog components, checking the On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) system, and performing an EVAP functional test. There is no tailpipe emissions test for diesel vehicles.

Hybrid Vehicles As of April 2015, hybrid electric vehicles are required to undergo smog inspections every two years, or when transferring ownership. The smog test for hybrids focuses on the car’s emissions system, but like diesel vehicles, hybrids are not subject to a tailpipe test.
